Internet has been shoody the last few days. I tried three times to post some photos with no luck. This morning I think I saw the best way to sum up Ghana 11 years later. I was walking in the neighbourhood and past a very typical Ghananian house: mud/cement walls metal roof, Wash area outside with kids and chickens all about, very neat and tidy. All looks the same. However, Dad is in the courtyard with baby tied to his back on his cell phone. And there is was -- Dad looking after baby, and the influx of mobile communications. Neither I would have likely seen ten years ago.
Scott and Sylvie are off to town right now to buy one of these mobile phones. It seems as if absolutely everyone has one and compared to Canada they are rather cheap. (I think Scott has already written about this). So we might be trying to give a call to Moma and Mom and Dad this weekend.
The teaching is going well. Yesterday we did some planning and have organized a class into literacy circles where we will work with group of 4-5 kids indiviudally depending on where they are with their reading. We tried this today and it went well. We have some kids who are still not able to form letters and others that are starting to read. Being able to work with them in small groups makes them able to practice where they need practice. The only challenge is space. It looks like we will be doing the circles on the ground in the 'office/internet cafe (with no internet)/library/storage area as there are not enough chairs. This seems pretty good as the room has an overhead fan and the kids get to come in from their 'outside' classroom (Their class room is just a structure with a roof in the yard). Sylvie was amazed to see the chickens wander among the kids and the lizards hanging out.
Well I just lost two paragraphs I had typed up. So I am going to sign off now. More to come later.
