Groundhog Day(s)

Because new volunteers arrived on Saturday -- the first new ones since we arrived 3 weeks ago -- this week has seen many of the same field trips and outings. Yesterday we went back to see the monkey preserve (with drumming and dancing thrown in afterwards) and today we got to go back to see the waterfalls we visited during our first week (on Alice's birthday).

While it was nice to visit both of these places again, I think we're feeling like we've had enough of Hohoe as we approach the 4 week mark. Like any extended stay anywhere, things like food and routine get repetitive, but unlike being at home (which is nothing if not repetitive and routine) we're not in charge of very much of our lives here. A taxi brings us to our placement everyday and picks us up. While we're there we try to work within the confines of the school's expectations. Our meals are cooked for us and there are housekeepers to change the sheets and tidy up.

For the first couple of weeks, this gave us lots of opportunity to explore the town and experience the culture -- which was great. But we've now done most of the superficial things that tourists can do. I always wonder, too, whether our brain knows that we're done on Saturday so it starts to wrap things up to get ready for the next part of the trip. Either way I think that we'll be ready to see another part of Ghana.
